Traveling gym
Traveling for work can absolutely disrupt your daily routine. I personally work on a tug boat which requires me to be away from home for 2 weeks at a time. During these two weeks I only have the exercise equipment that I bring, and possibly a heavy shackle or two.
Some boats I’ve outfitted with racks, bars, weights, and other equipment. But most of the time this isn’t doable because of the room this equipment takes up. Plus the cost of all this equipment.
I have compiled equipment that I can easily stow in a bag, most of these fits into a small draw string bag. With these items I can have a effective dose of resistance training and good cardio.
1) Jump rope, I have packed a Jump rope in my bag for 10 years. It’s a simple piece of equipment that will help with your conditioning. Jumping rope also is good for agility, foot Work, hand eye coordination, and fat loss. It might not be exactly like running but it will help carry over.
2) Resistance bands, I personally prefer the bands that are essentially oversized rubber bands rather than the tube style. Both will work well. I just like being able to choke the band around any object that is stable enough to use. This isn’t the perfect solution for weight training but they work in a pinch. You’re able to do most exercises with bands as long as you’re creative enough.
3) Water filled weight bags. I’m relatively new to these, I saw them online for a while and when I got moved off the boat in which I helped outfit a really nice gym I decided ahh let’s find a more cost-effective way to work out. These can come in different shapes, sizes, and designs. I went with the Yes 4 All Bulgarian Auqua bag for a couple reasons, I have been interested in Bulgarian bags for a couple years sense I first saw them I just didn’t want to splurge, It looked a lot mor versatile compared with the other options, the price was gooe compared to the other water filled Bulgarian style bags.
4) Gymnastic rings or other suspension systems, the effectiveness of suspension training is pretty well recognized, this is such a simple way to improve your body weight training. The biggest draw back is finding a safe and sturdy anchor point.
5) Yoga or exercise mat. Simply this makes exercising a little more comfortable.
These are things that I find to be the most useful, and I can fit all of them in a carry on bag. (Minus the yoga mat). In the next post I will be writing a couple work outs using the items that I listed above.
What are some things you like to bring while traveling?
